Choosing Flowers For Your Wedding

Have you ever noticed that as you've been to more and more weddings, you start to notice trends in how weddings are planned and arranged? Wedding dresses are constantly evolving, wedding reception halls continue to be up-to-date in a certain fashion sense, and the actual wedding and reception are becoming less and less traditional. But have you ever noticed wedding flower trends? Yes, they change as well. Have you decided what kind of flowers you want at your wedding?

For the following year, folks have predicted two color groups to be popular. The first is a trend moving towards flowers with a bright, sunny, colorful feel, particularly blue and white flowers. When I say bright and sunny, I'm referring to colors that you would see on a flag from a county in the Caribbean. Folks are getting more and more into the trend of having a wedding be less serious, and more fun! Which brings be to the next trend: there has also been some movement towards more traditional wedding styles. More bland colors - I'm talking about softer colors, and colors that are darker and not as flashy.

Of course, when choosing what kind of flowers for your wedding, there are other factors to consider outside of what's popular and trendy. First and foremost, make sure the flowers match the style of the wedding. Will the wedding be held in a large country colonial home in southern Georgia in late summer? Will the wedding be held in a mountain lodge during the time of year when wildflowers begin to bloom? It might seem obvious to make this a point, but I've seen very bland wedding flowers at a wedding filled with a majority of the folks there being young and in their 20s. On the opposite spectrum, I've seen weddings with wild colors where most of the folks there were born before 1950, and hence, more traditional.

Touching on the location of the wedding, you also have to keep in mind what season the wedding will be. A mountain lodge wedding in July vs. December will be completely different. Match the flowers for the time of year. My sister had a wedding in New Jersey in October. Their flowers were more traditionally colored - darker solid colors were seen throughout. But the colors were a beautiful variation of maroon, red, orange, and darker yellow. It was a very tasteful choice, as trees were starting to hit their peak autumn colors. We had so many compliments on how great the colors of the wedding flowers were.

It might seem obvious, but please match your flower selection with your outfits. Usually this is tough to miss, but I'd like to save to the trouble of walking down the aisle with a bouquet of red flowers that completely clash with your dark blue dress, or yellow necktie.

Finally, and maybe most important, do what's right for you. It's your wedding - keyword being 'your'. You only get to do it once - do it right, and do it for yourself. It's your special day? it's the day where everyone has gathered to celebrate the beginning of your new life. Remember: there is no right and wrong way to decorate and style a wedding. Have fun with it!
